I’m getting married in Kauai island in July. Originally we were going to do a small wedding on a beach and no reception, but now more people than we expected are coming to our wedding and we think we should have a reception. Our budget is tight and need to find an inexpensive(but nice atmosphere) place to have our reception……. Help!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there really is no such thing as an inexpensive reception in the Princeville or Hanalei Bay area. EVERYTHING is expensive on that end of Kauai because it’s the upscale tourist Mecca.
Best piece of advice I can give you is invest in a copy of “Kauai Revealed: The Ultimate Kauai Guide” by Andrew Doughty and Harriett Freeman — it’s available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Borders. The writers don’t get paid for their reviews, so any review they give concerning a resort or restaurant is honest (sometimes brutally honest). You should be able to find a nice resort or restaurant for your reception that won’t cost a fortune — unlike the main restaurant in the Princeville Resort (beautiful view overlooking Hanalei Bay and great food/service, but be prepared to pay over $120.00 per person for dinner…)
We got married on Kauai in Wai’oli Hui’ia Church. We had our wedding cake at a park at the beach, along with a small band playing ukulele and guitar while we danced right on the sand. It was all followed by inviting all the guests to a luau at the Coconut Beach Resort. Although the luau was not personalized to us (in fact there was another couple there that had just been married as well), it was a wonderful way to have a large meal and drinks for our guests to Hawaii. It was about $50.00 or $60.00 a head, but that was much more inexpensive than a formal reception.
Another idea is what we did in lieu of a rehearsal dinner. We reserved the balcony at the Princeville resort (adjacent to “The Living Room”, which is the lounge there). We paid for cocktails and appetizers, and we had a preestablished amount set. The balcony is not exclusive to just your group, but I noticed that only a few other people ventured out there with our big group there. The sunset view is AMAZING there. We were very happy. Perhaps you might want to do one of those. We were very happy. Good luck choosing. I hope you get the reception of your dreams!
